The Volvo Ocean Race (formerly the Whitbread Round the World Race) is a sailing regatta which has been held every four years since 1973, the course being a single circumnavigation of the globe. The regatta commences in Europe in the Autumn, and the route takes the boats across the Atlantic, round Africa, across the South Pacific to America and from there back to Europe again. The extremely harsh wind and weather conditions, especially in the South Pacific - wave heights of 30 m and wind speeds of 110 km/hr - ensure that the race is considered to be one of the most challenging in all sailing sport. The total distance covered is around45,000 km. The regatta is sailed in stages, each of which is assessed individually, with a final result produced at the end.
