Scale model of the barque Alexander von Humboldt operated by the German charity Sail Training of Bremerhaven (www.gruene-segel.de).
The model was developed according to original drawings in collaboration with the DSST.
The »Alex« was converted from a former light ship of 1906.At that time light ships were built with seaworthy sailing ship hulls. The central mast took the form of a lantern mast. More information on this subject can be found on the Internet.
To increase the vessel that separate ballast weight is added to the hull.
Sailing the model in wind strengths above 1 Beaufort is not recommended!
Since the model is not fitted with a variable rig, it should be operated as a powered boat with sails.
The »Alex« has become an extremely familiar sight through its appearance in television advertisements for a world-renowned brand of beer. The hull was painted green in recognition of the sailing ships of the Rickmers shipping company.
