This is the revolution for slow-fly and show-fly models, electric gliders, model boats and RC cars. Lithium-Polymer batteries, also known as LiPo packs, boast the highest energy density of any batteries ever used in modelling, i.e. the ratio of capacity : weight is significantly better than anything else. The cells´ current handling capacity has now been substantially improved, and the packs distributed by GRAUPNER are suitable for discharge currents of 5C - 20C according to type (see table). Please note that their effective capacity declines quite steeply at a discharge rate of 10C, varying according to cell type, i.e. only 45 - 85% of the stated capacity may be available, whereas 70 - 90% of nominal capacity is available if the discharge current is limited to 7C. The figures in the table for maximum permissible continuous current have been selected by GRAUPNER to ensure that the batteries provide a reasonable effective capacity of around 80%. However, since the cells still deliver their full residual capacity at lower current, it is possible to climb to height, glide for an extended period, and then climb again briefly once the pack has had time to recover, i.e. approximately the full stated capacity is then available. Already cells have been developed which cope well with continuous currents of 10 A whilst supplying around 80% of full capacity. These cells are therefore the ideal choice for slow-fly and show-fly models, electric gliders and electric power models with current drains of up to 10 A. During discharge the batteries must not be allowed to heat up to more than 70°C; if this is not the case, better cooling or a lower discharge rate are required. Battery temperature can easily be checked using the infra-red thermometer, Order No. 1963. Battery packs must not be wired in series or parallel, as the differences in cell capacity and state of charge may be excessive. For this reason battery packs supplied by us consist of selected cells. The basic rule is that series-wired LiPo packs may only be charged together if the voltage of the individual cells varies by no more than 0.05 V; this requires that the cell voltage should be matched as accurately as possible beforehand by charging or discharging cells individually. LiPo cells must be charged at a constant current of max. 2C (a value of 1C corresponds to the cell capacity) up to a maximum cell voltage of 4.2 V. After this the charge should continue at a constant voltage of 4.2 V per cell until the charge current falls below around 0.1 - 0.2 A. Various LiPo battery chargers are now available which meet these requirements. The cells must never be deep-discharged (< 2.5 V per cell), and must never be charged at voltages above 4.25 V per cell, or they will be permanently damaged. To avoid overcharging the cells genuine Graupner charge leads must be used. The cells should also be recharged individually at regular intervals in order to compensate for capacity differences. The capacity of a LiPo battery declines every time you charge or discharge it. Storing these batteries at excessively high or low temperatures may also cause a gradual reduction in capacity. In typical modelling usage these batteries will be subject to high discharge currents and motor induction currents, with the result that their capacity will fall to around 50 - 80% of the capacity of a new pack after 50 charge / discharge cycles even if you observe all the stated charge and discharge requirements. LiPo batteries should only be charged and discharged using chargers / dischargers specially designed to cope with them, and set to LiPo mode. Do not charge batteries above 4.2 V per cell!
Do not discharge batteries below 2.5 V per cell!
Do not short-circuit batteries!
