The Eider was built in 1989 at the Hitzler dockyard, Lauenburg as the FA Eider; the FA stood for Fischereiaufsicht (fisheries supervision). Today the Eider is finished in the blue colour scheme of the maritime police
Today the coastguard service operates as the co-ordinating office of the German Federal authorities. Amongst the coastguards duties are maritime environmental protection, security of shipping, fisheries protection, monitoring of customs borders and border police protection work; many of their tasks are shared in accordance with communal maritime laws
The vessel carries a core crew of six men, while its two KHD engines, each generating 1300 BHP, provide a top speed of 22.6 kn (corresponding to 42 km/hr)
The Eider recently moved house to Kappeln, Schlei, and is now assigned to Flensburg WSPR (maritime police)

The coast guards responsibilities include maritime environmental protection, the safety of waterborne traffic, fishery patrol, the monitoring of customs borders and police border protection; according to the Federal Maritime Responsibilities Act, many of these fields of responsibility are shared with others
- The ship has a basic crew of 6 and, thanks to the two KHD motors, each of which provides 1300 hp, reaches a maximum speed of 22.6 kn (equivalent to 42 km/h)
- As of late the Eider has been stationed in Kappeln, Schlei and assigned to the Flensburg harbour police
